GOP Congressman Has Radical Proposal: Make Members of Congress Live Under Obamacare

While Americans nationwide have felt the effects of Obamacare, there’s one group of people who haven’t experienced its benefits or challenges first hand — members of Congress.

As part of an administrative rule during its 2013 implementation, congressional members were exempted from the exchange. An exemption that given the current health care stalemate, Sen. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) claims is more important than ever.

“They have their own special exchange in D.C. The president can undo that by administrative action,” he told Fox News on Friday. “I think if he were to undo that and make Congress live under it, I think they’d be rushing to repeal it.”

The Washington Examiner reported that on the House floor on Thursday, DeSantis claimed the repeal process would be “simple” if Congress had to live under it and questioned the legality of the exemption.

He explained that Obamacare included a provision that Congress would drop their congressional health plans and instead use the Obamacare exchange, where they would have to pay their own premiums.

“Yet an Obama administration regulation gutted this provision and provided lucrative taxpayer subsidies for members, thereby creating an illegal exemption for Congress under Obamacare,” the Washington Examiner reported he told the House floor.

After Congress didn’t have enough votes to pass a health care bill that would repeal and immediately replace Obamacare, on Tuesday, the GOP shifted their position to repeal first and replace later.

However, on Thursday, after a meeting with President Donald Trump, Republicans returned to their original goal to repeal and replace, and plan to vote on a new bill next week.
